Man Avoided Paying Rent by Living in a Sandcastle for the Past 20+ Years

Brazil-native Marcio Mizael Matolias, also known as “King Marcio,” is residing in one of Rio de Janeiro’s most esteemed neighborhoods Barra da Tijuca and he manages to do that without paying rent or any other bills. How? Well, he built himself a sandcastle on the beach.

According to Matolias, he initially built the sandcastle 22 years ago as storage and didn’t intend to live there. But as his creation needed constant maintenance, he decided to leave his apartment and settle down on the beach.

“I grew up in the Bay of Guanabara, I always lived on the beach,” Matolias told The Mirror. “People pay exorbitant rents to live in front of the sea, I do not have bills and here I have a good life.”

He now spends his days playing golf, reading books and talking to beachgoers who are intrigued by his home. In order to afford food, “King Marcio” sells used books from his sandcastle while the local shopping mall sometimes hires him to create sand pieces for their display.
