Old, Abandoned Aiport is Now a Luxury Hotel

In 1930, Trans World Airlines (TWA) started its operations and became one of the largest airlines in the United States. But in 2001, the company closed its business and the Flight Center at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport also shuttered its doors to the public.

The TWA Flight Center was built in 1962 by renowned architect Eero Saarinen. It features sweeping lines and well-ventilated areas that look vintage but still feels contemporary. Present-day architecture companies Lubrano Ciavarra, INC., Beyer Blinder Belle, and Stonehill Taylor wanted to keep the history alive by highlighting the mid-century modern look. The lobby, business and event center feature some of the original waiting area designs. The common areas and guest rooms are also constructed based on a retro-inspired style with accents of red.

Aptly called the TWA Hotel, this luxury hotel will officially open on May 15, 2019.
