Photographer Captures the Uncontrollable Beauty of Ocean Waves

Drew Doggett is a photographer and filmmaker who bring the extraordinary stories of the most unique people, places and cultures to the world through his incredible photographs.

His latest project called Swell: Endless Blue, captures the abstract patterns and shapes that emerge when surfers ride some of the world’s most gigantic waves. You can check out his website here.

“When I set out to create the series Swell: Endless Blue, I wanted to highlight the patterns and the relationship between surfers and waves more than anything else,” Doggett tells My Modern Met. “While the ocean’s unpredictability may seem like its predominant behavior, when you spend time watching waves you begin to notice patterns and shapes that may have not been initially apparent.”

Doggett captured the images from an aerial perspective, revealing the abstract patterns that the waves create as they swell and crash. The surfers harmoniously weave in and out of the waves, creating a perfect union between humans and nature.

I am thrilled to announce the release of The Escape, my latest short film featuring Hawaiian pro surfer @alanarblanchard 🎥For Alana, the act of surfing is about the sport as much as it is about the rare opportunity it grants her to be purely in the moment. Throughout a kaleidoscope of visuals in and out of one of Alana’s favorite surf spots, this film expands on the sensation leading up to and after the joy of those moments where a sense of all-consuming happiness is met by the bliss of knowing that nothing matters more than being present. First and foremost, I'm grateful to have co-directed it with my colleague, @lilylenore who helped shape the piece from the very start. @Tay_steele was the wizard behind the lens both in an out of the water, @cavanjfaucett pieced the footage together in the edit room, @awardagency created the most beautiful custom score to accompany the visuals, and @Carlosfloresfilms brought the piece to life through color.
