Russian Artist Uses Pepe the Frog as Her Subject In Paintings

Pepe The Frog is probably the most famous internet meme since his first appearance in 2005. The green anthropomorphic frog with a humanoid body is created by Matt Furie for his comic called Boy’s Club.

Platforms likes Myspace, Gaia Online and 4chan used it as a meme and by 2015, it had become one of the most popular memes used on 4chan and Tumblr. The character’s image had been appropriated as one of the symbols of the controversial alt-right movement in 2016.

Russian artist Olga Vishnevsky, aka Pepelangelo, saw the frog in a different way. To her, the popular meme “is not a symbol of hate, but a symbol of peace, love and solidarity.” In fact, it is one of her favorite memes.

“I spent a lot of time on the Russian 4chan and Pepe the Sad Frog was one of my favorite memes. I started collecting rare Pepes and I had no idea about Matt Furie, Donald Trump, alt-right and so on. I just loved to save pictures with Pepe the Frog who was sad in different situations,” Vishnevsky told Bored Panda.

From iconic paintings to mosaics and sculptures, the artist portrayed the adorable green frog in a positive note like what the creator of Pepe saw it under. Check out her paintings below.
