Storyboard artist and illustrator Alex Chiu has worked with the biggest names in the industry. Those include Marvel Animation, Nickelodeon, Warner Bros., and Cartoon Network. Currently working as a storyboard artist for Netflix, Chiu’s style is very much inspired by manga.

“I always doodled as a kid according to my parents,” she recalled in an interview with Concept Art Empire. “But I didn’t really pick up the pencil and draw everyday with the intention of getting better in some shape or form until I was 10.” All that changed when she started reading manga. “I considered it when I was in high school and deciding where I wanted to go to school,” she said, “but I don’t think it was until sophomore or junior year of college when I narrowed down my career path to art.”

Her work is very much character-driven, with cartoon-like people being her favorite subjects. But she also very much enjoys drawing pigeons and lizards. “In high school a bit and in college, I was afraid to like anime,” she admits. “I thought I had to exclusively like Disney and that enjoying series like Naruto and One Piece was a bad thing. It took me a while to accept and understand that there are a lot of people that like both, and that’s totally fine!”

According to Chiu, when it comes to storyboarding, your drawing ability serves as a clarification vehicle for your storytelling skills. “I think typically you want to showcase a bit of variety,” she says. “Action, comedy, and drama. If you can hit all 3 of those beats in, let’s say, 1 large sequence and 1 or 2 additional shorter ones then that’s pretty good. But don’t forget to keep it short and sweet.”

If you let your imagination run free, even the simplest materials can turn into a unique piece of art. Andrea Love is an independent animator and filmmaker from Port Townsend, Washington, who loves to create animation, not with colors, digital tools or even play dough – but with wool.

Andrea has always loved films, and when she had to decide on a college, she ended up enrolling in a movie production program. On top of learning how to write, direct and produce films, she also taught herself how to create stop motion animation – a traditional animation technique were puppets are moved and put in slightly different poses and photographed each time. In the end, the photos are shown in quick succession to create the illusion of movement.

Most stop-motion artists use clay, play dough, wood and metal to create their characters and story, but Andrea went for a different style when she chose to create everything with wool. The wool has a simple, handmade quality, and is extremely versatile – it can be felted to create 3d objects, or combed and straightened to create flat lines, and can be moved around easily.

Andrea’s animations are not only beautiful but also feel warm and welcoming – between the old-timey stop-motion, the soft, fluffy wool, and the lovely themes – these short films will make you feel right at home.

We’re sure you know what we’re talking about. If you’ve ever had to do some creative work under pressure but found yourself in a creative block, you’ll relate to The Idea

“We wrote a track that injects a sense of tension and mystery, underlining the pressure to deliver and the enigma of creativity. Inspiration is taken from the likes of Kubrick and Hitchcock, including a vintage style of audio production that emulates the genre and reflects the texture of the animation,” the video description reads.

Watch this short and entertaining video below and see how an idea can go through several iterations as it bounces from one place to another, while the originator tries to make sense of it all without losing his mind.

Short animated video Hair Love is a touching and funny story created by the former NFL player Matthew Cherry that shows the struggles of an adorable girl named Zuri who tries to do something cute with her natural hair.

The story is actually deeper than it first seems. In the beginning, we see that Zuri has an important day ahead of her and that she wants to do something special with her hair, but she quickly realizes that she will need help with that. Watching an instructional video on her tablet isn’t doing her much favor. She calls her dad for help, but he’s in a hurry and just wants to give her a hat. Turns out, it was Zuri’s mom who has always done her hair, but she’s not here right now.

As the movie approaches its end, we realize that the video Zuri was watching actually featured herself and her mom and that her mom is currently in a hospital, waiting for the two of them to come and visit her. Zuri’s dad manages to follow the instructions his wife shared and Zuri goes to visit her mom with her favorite hairstyle.

Watch the video below.

Illustrator, designer, and animator Michael Lester doesn’t stick to one particular style. Working for an array of clients, his creations are varied and allow for different approaches. “I don’t really have a niche, and that’s something I’ve rooted for from the beginning,” he admitted in an interview with Lecture in Progress. “I’d much rather be a person to come to for an answer to a problem than a go-to for a particular style.”

“Design trends come and go but communication is always at the core of what I do,” he stresses. “If you try to latch on to a current style too much, you’ll get left behind. The best thing you can do is focus on the ideas in your work.”

Having studied fine art in college, led him to study illustration at university. These two steps helped him then progress more naturally into animation. “Waiting to start anything is often seen as negative, but as long as you eventually start, a little time can actually do some good,” he says. “When I finally started to animate I had a strong illustrative style to work with and better writing skills to approach the narrative.”

Since graduating, he launched a freelance career and spent four years building a broad international client base consisting of both agency work and direct relationships with companies. In 2018, he set up Beginners, a creative studio focusing on animation, illustration and design production on a larger scale. “The great thing about working for yourself is you can adapt and respond to those patterns and make that time up in the evening,” he says.

Illustrator and animator Dan Woodger is known for his character-based illustrations. Playful, colorful, and childlike – his artwork has adorned anything from stickers to murals. Since graduating from Brighton University in 2011, he’s worked for clients as big as Google, Apple, and McDonald’s. He also specializes in emoji and icon design.

“The most enjoyable part is the excitement of getting a new brief, and the possibilities of what that job is going to entail,” said Woodger in an interview with Lecture in Progress. “It’s invigorating taking on a new project with interesting challenges. Any time I get to travel for work, see new places and meet new people, makes me feel like it’s all worth it. The thrill of seeing my work out in the world, and having people recognize it is always amazing. I’ve also really enjoyed doing more public speaking, and exchanging knowledge and experiences.”

His toolbox includes both digital and analog tools: pencils and sheets of A3 paper on the one hand; and a scanner, Photoshop, and Wacom tablet on the other. “The skill set definitely shifts in the industry,” he says. “It’s important to accept the changes within technology and adapt your workflow.”

His advice to other aspiring creatives? Remember what makes you tick. “I love humour, so if I can amuse myself with my work then I’m achieving my goal,” he says. “I work so insanely hard, if I’m not enjoying what I make, what’s the point? I understand this isn’t always easy – it’s a challenge as a freelancer to continue to make ends meet and pay the bills. So do what you need to do, but just remember that core principle of who you are and what you like.”

We recently showed you a video published by animation channel Bebop and it was about a Lego pizza. This time, Bebop brings us a new adorable stop-motion animation that shows frying a rubber chicken.

First, we see the “chef” making the chicken using clay. Once that was done, he cuts its head and legs and starts the recipe. He covers the chicken in flour and deep-fries it in oil. In the end, the video shows him “biting” into the fried chicken.

Bebop has around 170,000 subscribers on YouTube, and many of them commented below this video saying that his work is excellent and even underrated. We wholeheartedly agree with that, and that’s why we are sharing it with you today. Don’t forget to send this link to friends who may appreciate this.

“I balance work in a very precarious, haphazard way,” she admitted in an interview with Babyface. “But I always knew I had to be multidisciplinary. I’m only happy if I’m taking on absolutely everything.”

“I literally knew what I wanted to be since I was tiny,” she added. “Apparently when I was younger I would say I was going to be an author and an illustrator. I was obsessed with the library, I literally rinsed the children’s section of every book.”

Indeed, her illustrations are very narrative-driven, relying heavily on Yu’s observations and then turning these observations into stories. Describing her style as both gentle and zesty, she adds that “it’s very autobiographical and personal too, as my drawings are from my day to day life.”

Her advice to other creatives? “Believe you are someone important, and you will be.” Follow her Instagram page for more:

Rune Fisker is well recognized for his dynamic and eye-popping illustrations, which, though still, seem to be full of movement. Which makes sense, judging by his love of both animation and illustration. Inspired by photography, architecture, music, or his kids doing weird things, he admits that the everyday sights and sounds seep into his subconscious, and later pop up in his drawings.

Growing up in the flat countryside of Denmark, Fisker spent most of his time drawing with and on whatever he could find. Now, many years later, he runs his own animation company, Benny Box, along with his brother Esben.

Talking with The Association of Illustrators about the difference between animation and still illustration, Fisker stated that “a lot more preparation goes into making an animated illustration. First of all you have to plan what parts of the illustration you want to move, and keep in mind that it has to loop; all of this has to be thought out in the sketch phase so you don’t end up with an illustration that looks good as a still but doesn’t work as a moving piece.”

On the other end, “when you make a traditionally still illustration you can have a super big mess of digital layers without it being a problem. But with an animated illustration, there’s one more step after you have made illustration: making it move, so it’s important to have all the elements divided into a neat layer structure which you can then bring into After Effects.”

With clients as big as Apple, Google, The New Yorker, and the New York Times, it’s clear that there’s a huge audience for both his animation and illustration work.

At only 24, Joey Yu has made quite a name for herself, as both an illustrator and an animator. Based in London, her clients include The New York Times, Guardian, Hermes, and Ermenegildo Zegna (to name a few). And if that’s not enough she also dabbles in curation and fashion.
