If you’re an Instagram junkie like we are, curating your feed can be a daunting task. One thing to keep in mind is: keep it light! Following accounts that make you happy—and more importantly, hungry—is crucial in the days of quarantine. With traveling limited to our kitchens, here at PlayJunkie, we seek out the best Instagram pages to keep you motivated.

This week, we present you with Jessica Merchant. The mastermind behind the hugely successful food blog How Sweet Eats, Merchant has amassed over 500,000 fans on Instagram (and counting!). Scrolling through her page, you’ll easily get hooked.

Merchant’s blog and accompanying Instagram offers anything from healthy recipes to comfort food and indulgent desserts to cocktails and mocktails. “One of my main points is to not be afraid to make things your own,” she told Bakepedia.

Merchant puts her money where her mouth is. A self-taught cook, she taught herself the ins and out of cooking and baking through trial and error. According to Merchant, she makes upwards of six recipes per day and tests most of her recipes at least once.

“My desserts aren’t as precise as many [dessert recipes], and a lot of them allow you to swap things in and out,” she admits. She adds that “it’s all about trial and error; that’s how I learned to bake. So don’t be afraid!”

Get your hands—and feed—messy by following her on Instagram. You can also purchase her best-selling cookbooks, Seriously Delish, and The Pretty Dish.

When it comes to cooking, Norwegian cook and author, Signe Johansen, adheres to the notion that everything tastes better with butter. “It is generally my fat of choice when cooking,” she remarked once in an interview with The Guardian. “I make my own, but I also usually buy some too – both salted and unsalted. I go through so much of it.”

Johansen puts her money where her mouth is, with recent posts on Instagram including a mouthwatering photo of maple, toasted pecan, and sour cream muffins, as well as a recipe for the ultimate cinnamon bun.

The author of six food and drink books, Johansen has written for publications like The TimesSunday TimesDaily MailStella, and Marie Claire, exploring Nordic cuisine and beyond. She’s also the co-founder of “Spirited Women”, encouraging women to try whiskey and other spirits (with an accompanying book titled “Spirited” where you can find fifty cocktail recipes).

Another recommended book is “How to Hygge”, where Johansen outlines the Nordic way of living. “When I’m invited to dinner I always take some Nordic homemade jam – plum or wild blueberry,” she shared. “I make a very punchy tart jam, not overly sweet, with a lot of flavour. People always love homemade jam.”

If you’re a fan of Nordic minimalism, buttery desserts, and cocktail hours, you might have just hit the jackpot.

When it comes to cooking, some feel right at home in the kitchen, while others can’t make scrambled eggs. Still, everybody has to eat – and when you know-how, life gets so much simpler.

That’s where Laura Vitale comes in the picture. This self-taught home cook has decided to venture on to YouTube and teach everybody how to cook – because she really believes anybody can step into the kitchen and make themselves a decent meal.

Laura isn’t a professional cook herself. Her love of cooking and baking comes from her own experiences in the kitchen, and over the years, she’d picked up more than a few tricks. Like all truly experienced cooks know, knowing how to cook doesn’t mean you can follow a recipe to a tee and recreating someone else’s recipe perfectly – it’s about experimenting, knowing what works together, and having the confidence to try something new.

That’s what Laura’s channel is about. Laura spends her time experimenting in the kitchen and creating new recipes. Then, when she’s satisfied with the result, she uploads a new video to YouTube and shares a breakdown of her process. Her viewers can try to make the recipe themselves or create their own unique versions at home.

Laura’s welcoming, down-to-earth attitude really connects with lots of foodies online. She had over 3 million subscribers, and 500 million views! And with each new subscriber, her message spreads even further – you don’t have to be a genius to cook. Just step into the kitchen and start working.

There’s nothing like a good Rags to Riches story – which is why we adore Nadiya Hussain.

Nadiya is a British celebrity chef and TV personality, who is known for her radiant smile and cheerful energy as much as for her incredible cooking skills. Nadiya broke out just a few years ago – thanks to The Great British Bakeoff.

Up until recently, Nadiya was a regular homemaker and mom. Coming from a traditional Muslim family, she was married in an arranged marriage at 19, and a mother of three before she was thirty. But she still had her talent and passions – she was a wonderful self-taught cook with a remarkable ability to take traditional recipes and give them her own special twist.

Then, the audition to The Great British Bakeoff came along, and Nadiya decided to try out, just to see if she could make it. Not only did she makes it to that season, but she also made it all the way to the top, and was that year’s winner!

Her story from that point on is a story of phenomenal success. She has been featured in multiple talk shows, participated in a few BBC specials, and even published several books!

It’s easy to see why she’s so successful – it’s not just her unique food, but her warm and welcoming personality. She makes even the most difficult recipes feel accessible, and her calm and happy manner will make even a complete newbie feel right at home in the kitchen.

Ida Skeivenes used to have everything a person could want in life – the Scandinavian-born data analyst had a comfortable government job and a loving partner. She loved what she did for a living and her life in general, but still, something was missing. She needed a creative outlet.

Healthy eating was always a big part of her life, and she especially loved making colorful, healthy breakfasts using fresh fruit, waffles, yogurt and more. In June of 2012, she decided to turn her creative breakfasts into her new creative outlet and opened an Instagram account to document her breakfasts and other meals. She plated her food and turned each dish into visual stories.

Slowly but surely, she gathered followers. She now had over 200k followers on Instagram – and has quit her day job to become a full-time Instagram food artist. On top of her IG account, she manages a blog, and has a book coming out soon!

Ida’s story is as inspiring as her food art, and her meals will make anyone smile in delight. Check out some of her lovely creations.

From Seinfeld’s soup and babka to SpongeBob Krabby Patty, television is filled with food. It can look nice, it can look nasty, the characters can go “yum!” or they can make a face at it… but we, the audience, never get to really know if it’s any good or not. Which is where Andrew Rea enters the picture.

Andrew Rea started out as a filmmaker with a love for food and natural curiosity regarding the food he saw on TV. He’d always wondered how those recipes would be like in real life. And since he had the technical skills to both cook and film his creations, he launched his YouTube channel, Binging With Babish.

Binging With Babish is dedicated to the recreation and improvement of TV recipes. Each video, Rea takes a look at another TV food, tries to break it down to its ingredients, and recreated it as accurately as possible. Then he judges the result based on looks, texture, and taste, and tries to create his own, improved twist on it, if possible.

What started out as a hobby soon attracted quite a lot of attention, and now Rea has so many subscribers, that he quit his day job as a filmmaker and turned *Binging With Babish* into a  career. HE already has two spin-offs of the show, a published book, and many other food-related projects on the way. What makes the channel such a hit? Maybe it’s Rea’s editing filmography skills and radiophonic voice, or maybe it’s the fun of recreating insane TV recipes. Whatever it is, his videos are a joy to watch, even if the recipes aren’t always good.

Some celebrity chefs make cooking look like magical art, something that can only be mastered with an innate talent and years of training. Chef John’s life mission is to show that cooking really isn’t that hard.

Chef John is a professional chef who worked in the food industry for over 20 years, filling every position from waiter to chef, before deciding to quit and move on to teaching. At first, he taught at a California Culinary Academy, but his true passion was spreading the love of cooking to people who didn’t want to go into the industry, and who didn’t even think they could cook.

He started out with a humble blog, a single camera, and a tape recorder. His limited equipment led to some editorial decisions: he stayed off-camera, focused on the food, and used voice-over to explain the process. This signature style, along with his ability to break down recipes and explain plainly and clearly, made him a YouTube phenomenon. Today he has over 3 million subscribers that watch his bi-weekly videos religiously.

Chef John’s main goal is to help others learn to cook. Early on, he didn’t give out full recipes, so that his viewer at home would experiment and find the perfect recipe for them. Today, you can find his recipes online, but his philosophy remains the same –  experiment, find your own taste and have fun in the kitchen.

For some, cooking is a form of art, a skill they’ve cultivated over the years, a real passion. Others prefer living on takeaways and will not step into a kitchen is they can avoid it. But truth be told, cooking is an essential skill, and believe it or not, it’s not that hard to learn. Or at least, that’s what Joshua Weissman is trying to prove to his viewers.

Joshua Weissman is a twenty-something-year-old chef and Youtuber. Unlike many celebrity chefs, he’s completely self-taught. His love of cooking started early when as a small boy he would help his mother out in the kitchen. Slowly but surely, he learned the craft of cooking, and by high school, he was a master.

Joshua wanted to share his passion with others, and to do that, he did what anybody in this day and age does – he went online. He started his blog and then his YouTube cooking channel, and shared his favorite recipes with his growing audience.

Today, Joshua is a real celebrity chef. he’s gathered so many subscribers over the years that he decided to quit his job at a high-end restaurant and become a full-time YouTuber. And when you look at his channel, it’s easy to understand why he’s so successful – his food and photography are incredibly stylish, yet he knows how to break every recipe down and make even the most complicated dish seem easy to make. And there’s nothing we love more than quality food we can make at home!

You may want to skip the photos below if you’re feeling hungry, because Dennis Prescott’s photography will make you want to eat it all right away. Approaching half a million followers on Instagram, this talented food photographer is becoming somewhat of an authority in the foodie community.

Prescott was a musician for 10 years and basically lived in a 15-passenger van, traveling around the world. “I moved to Nashville in 2008 and while I was there I became obsessed with food,” he shares.

“I became obsessed with cooking food, but more specifically feeding people. That specific aspect of orchestrating in dining, in the sense that you’re spending another hour at the table, I really wanted to invest in that as someone who lived on the road,” he explained

Photography followed him no matter what he was doing, so it was only natural to merge it with cooking at some point. The result: these amazing photos below and a cookbook titled Eat Delicious. Enjoy!

Enjoy!
