These Bronze Book Sculptures Have Placid Faces Emerging From its Pages

Paola Grizi became interested in art at a young age, having been mentored by her grandfather who was a famous Italian painter and sculptor.

Today, Grizi is known for her contemporary artworks – including incredible sculptures of faces emerging from the tousled pages of books. Her works are sculpted in terracotta or cast in bronze and she continuously evolves into more complex pieces of architecture. Some of the pieces are sculpted as traditional books, while others are designed in abstract way such as pieces of bronze paper are folded and stacked in cube-like arrangements.

Though we’re losing the physicality of books due to technology, Grizi believes that books will continue to have its unparalleled charm. “It’s the physicality of books that intrigues me, from the sounds that occur when leafing through pages, to the sight of ink on the page, to the tactile sensation of the paper, up to the olfactory sensation that distinguishes antique books from new ones,” she told My Modern Met.
