This Artist Uses Transparent Plastic Sheets to Create One of a Kind 3D Art

David Spriggs is best known for his unique large-scale 3D ephemeral-like installations using a technique he developed in 1999, layering transparent images. His work is composed of a series of transparent plastic sheets inhabited by hand-drawn shapes and figures. When superposed, the hand-painted shapes create the illusion of 3D forms appearing like they magically glow and hover in place.

“He explores the representation and strategies of power, the symbolic meanings of color, movement, and the thresholds of form and perception. The subjects depicted in his work specifically relate to the breakdown and recreation of form and volume – as seen through his interest in cyclones, explosions, and forces,” according to his Facebook page.

Spriggs works from abstract topographical maps that are based on absolute geometric shapes. “I often use the golden ratio to determine the placement and shape of a form. Axis of Power, for example, is based on a perfect golden spiral and the placement of the eye of the storm located at the golden ratio of the installation at 1.618,” he told Colossal. “The artwork Gravity also is based on the golden spiral with all the marks following this spiral in a perfect hemisphere.”

His latest work, “Axis of Power,” is on exhibition at the Powerlong Museum in Shanghai and runs through Oct. 7, 2019.

Form is the visible configuration of parts coming together into a shape or structure. The Cubists painted objects simultaneously from many viewpoints in one image. In effect, they were representing how we perceive and how we understand a form from a combination of many viewpoints. It is in our mind that we join these various viewpoints together to understand of how an object resides in space.  In a similar manner, the separate multiple layered images in the artwork ‘Gravity’ by artist David Spriggs @david_spriggs are collectively joined together in our mind to reveal the sense of a three-dimensional form.  We perceive all the images of ‘Gravity’ simultaneously as a form, but one without boundaries. The implied motion around a central axis in the artwork ‘Gravity’ is not unlike the circular navigation of the viewer who walks around the work in order to comprehend its three-dimensional nature. David Spriggs @david_spriggs gives immaterial-form to contemporary State power with his monumental scale layered artwork ‘Regisole’. The artwork which represents an armoured police officer on horseback is hand painted in a very technological-like colouring, reminiscent of the thermal-imaging camera imagery used by the police and the military. The spectrum goes from a deep red – for the warmest parts – to a dark blue – for the coolest parts. ‘Regisole’ glows like an apparition, creating a moving chromatic experience. Spriggs’ ‘Regisole’ is inspired by the ancient equestrian statue of the same name originally erected during the 3rd century AD for a Roman Emperor in Ravenna, Italy. ‘Regisole’ means ‘Sun King’. Regis is Latin for king, and Sol means the sun. The original ‘Regisole’ was destroyed after the French Revolution since it was seen as a symbol of monarchy. Spriggs’ positioning of the police officer and horse accurately represent the description of the positioning of the original ‘Regisole’, such as with the outstretched hand of the officer in the ‘adlocutio‘ position (Latin: addressing) exercising power and authority. . . #contemporaryart #contemporarysculpture #sculpture #3Dpainting #mixedmedia #lightart #installationart #artinstallation #installation #art #painting #davidspriggs
