Artist Upcycles Old Leaves By Creating Crochet Embellishments Around Them

Inspired by nature, UK-based artist Susanna Bauer incorporates found natural objects such as leaves, stones, and piece of woods into her crochet artworks.

The rigidness and brittleness of the leaves make them a very challenging material to work with but Bauer’s incredible skills, patience, and gentle handling paved the way in creating the leaf sculptures.

“There is a fine balance in my work between fragility and strength; literally, when it comes to pulling a fine thread through a brittle leaf or thin dry piece of wood, but also in a wider context – the tenderness and tension in human connections, the transient yet enduring beauty of nature that can be found in the smallest detail, vulnerability and resilience that could be transferred to nature as a whole or the stories of individual beings,” she wrote on her website.

She sews the leaves together in a creative way, transforming these old, dried leaves into delicate works of art. Her creations remind us to appreciate the beauty even in the smallest of things and no matter how seemingly insignificant, all of nature is a treasure.
