Canadian Woman Wins Cheese Wheel Race Despite Being Knocked Unconcious

The unusual tradition of Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling & Wake in Gloucester, UK, has made the headlines more than once in the past. The unique event sees hundreds of participants racing down a 200-yard-long hill in an attempt to catch a wheel of Gloucester cheese.

Thanks to its fame, the cheese wheel race featured participants from all over the world in recent years. This is why it isn’t surprising to hear that Canadian Delaney Irving won the 2023 edition of the event. However, the way she did it is really something.

The 19-year-old Irving managed to get the cheese wheel despite being knocked unconscious during the race.

In a later interview with the Canadian outlet CBC, Irving explained that she was on a backpacking trip through the UK and decided to take part in the famed event. When the race started, she stumbled and ended up landing hard on the ground, which made her unconscious.

However, the momentum was enough to get her over the finishing line first.

“I wasn’t really sure what was going on, but I found the block of cheese was on my lap, so that’s how I knew I won,” she shared.

Irving added that she will return in 2024 but doesn’t want to compete again. Instead, she will just watch.
