Design Studio Creates Colorful and Modern Takes on Cuckoo Clock

You might think that cuckoo clocks are things of the past and can now only be found in museums and old mansions. However, design studio Woodmess from Istanbul, Turkey, is showing that cuckoo clocks can belong to modern times.

Woodmess is run by husband and wife duo Serdar and Suzi Kar, who create colorful and modern takes on traditional cuckoo clocks. Handcrafted, these cuckoo clocks come in all shapes and sizes, serving as an eye-catching decoration piece while also serving their primary purpose. They feature a mechanical bird that comes out of its hiding every hour and announces its presence with wing flaps and a recognizable cuckoo sound.

Serdar, who comes from a family of craftsmen, initially started making cuckoo clocks in 2020 after previously making various decorative objects in his attic.

“I always had a passion for cuckoo clocks since my childhood and remaking them with modern designs was always in my mind,” he shares.

Two years later, Suzi also got on board as a designer and the two have turned Serdar’s passion into a family business. They also receive help from their dog Zek, who has the title of Quality Control Officer.
