Marina Esmeraldo’s Art Bursts with Shapes and Colors

Artist Marina Esmeraldo experiments with color and shape. With a background in architecture and a love for Modern Art, Esmeraldo’s style is minimalist but striking – her illustrations bursting with shapes, patterns, and compositions.

Having exhibited her work around the world, including in the Venice Biennale, she has also worked commercially, collaborating with brands like Nike, Google, Penguin, Adidas, and the likes. Based between Barcelona and London, she draws from her tropical upbringing in northeast Brazil, as well as her travels around the world.

“My work represents where I come from, who I am and how I currently see the world,” she told The Wild Magazine, adding that amongst the many things that drive her artistic creativity are music, cinema, fashion, museums, patterns, a walk by the beach, mid-century artists and makers, as well as a healthy competitive drive.

But when it comes to her style, she admits that she’s drawn to a lot of clashing theories, like Minimalism and Postmodernism. She’s also very much drawn to palm trees. “I love palm trees, I have a deep intrinsic relationship with them, to the point of choosing to live in Barcelona because of that common link with my tropical hometown,” she relayed. “I also love Finnish design and architecture, I think they usually find the perfect visual balance between serenity and busy-ness!”
