We can all agree that murals make the streets of any city more lively and inviting. That is especially the case with the murals from UK artist Sophie Mess.

Mess specializes in botanical murals that see her adorn grey buildings and urban structures with depictions of flowers, plants, leaves, and occasional vibrant birds. Her works can be found on the streets of major European cities like London, UK, and Paris, France.

Wherever they settle, Mess’ murals become an integral part of the urban surrounding. They attract the attention of both locals and tourists, who can’t resist taking a short break in their walk and admire the artwork.

According to Mess, she aims to create her botanical murals in a way that they “radiate” energy and life.” This is easily seen through her use of bold colors, attention to detail, and imagination-evoking elements.

“I find joy in this juxtaposition of the delicate interpretations of nature within the urban landscape, and finding the harmony between these seemingly contrasting elements,” Mess shares.

Besides creating large-scale artworks in the form of murals, Mess also makes botanic-inspired paintings that have been exhibited in various art galleries and collaborate with clothing brands on wearable art projects.

Muralist and graphic artist, Peru Dyer Jalea (aka Peru 143) considers himself a proponent of the Graffuturism movement — a term coined by artist and art commentator Poesia in an attempt to define an aesthetic and a common string that some of the graffiti artists, painters, and photographers share.

Jalea’s style is marked by a puzzle-like use of simple geometric shapes, clean lines scaled up to fit any space, and the use of primary colors evocative of the simplicity of childhood. Reworking simple and bright graphic elements into complex patterns and meditative murals, his art is meant to evoke a feeling of uplifting wonder.

Ultimately, Jalea writes on his website, his purpose is to encourage social change in the form of consciousness-shifting works of art – to create works that communicate the necessity of evolving and rising above our differences by understanding the interconnectedness of all living things.

Born in Peru and currently based in Toronto, where he shares a home with his wife and kids, Jalea admits to being an avid traveler. It was actually during his travels that he formulated his approach to both his life and his art. “We are all interconnected and even though we’ve created borders and hierarchies in the world we are still one people, a race of explorers in the constant pursuit of perfection,” he stated in an interview with Talenthouse. “We have to learn to better help each other.”

With more than 20 years of painting murals and clients that include Facebook, Nike, Cirque du Soleil, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, his words are well worth taking note of.

Spanish painter and sculptor Okuda San Miguel is known for his distinctive style of colorful geometric patterns that portray animals, skulls, religious iconography, and human figures. His distinctive style of geometric harmonies emboldened with intense colors can make his artworks feel like they’re from a parallel universe.

In his work, rainbow geometric architectures blend with organic shapes, bodies without identity, headless animals, and symbols that encourage reflection. His works (that might be categorized as Pop Surrealism meets Street Art), aims at raising questions about existentialism, the universe, the infinite, the meaning of life, and the contradictions of society’s false freedom. “My work is more related to surrealism and pop-art, which I discovered in school, than to street art or what is known as contemporary art,” he explained in an interview with Design Boom.

Not shying from making a statement, his work also includes massive murals as well as a number of churches, transformed into colorful installations. “I love to work on a large scale because it’s more breathtaking and I prefer to select this size of the project,” he admitted.

“I usually don’t do sketches for big murals,” he adds. “I love to draw directly on the walls and keep creating and improvising during the process. I need to see in person the whole architecture and try to play with that. when I do sculptures I need to sketch and then take it to my team to work it out in 3D. depending on the project, I have about 4 assistants that help me with everything.”

ROA is best known for his giant murals of animals like rats, snakes, crocodiles, and birds that decorate buildings all over the world. So far he worked all across Europe and the United States, as well as Australia, Asia, New Zealand, and Africa.

“Exploration of nature, more specifically of the animal world, can lead to increased empathy,” ROA explains his inspiration with animals and nature. “It teaches you something substantial about how one should live a good life.”

This talented artist usually uses minimal color pallet, with black and white being predominant in his works. Another impressive thing about his works is that he doesn’t use sketches, preferring to immediately go to work.

Bright, colorful, and a little cheeky, her art is very much contemporary. “I am in love with shapes, colors, and textures,” she admitted in an interview with Ballpitmag. “Bauhaus, Memphis, Japanese Graphic Design and Surrealism were the most formative movements for my work.”

After studying fine arts in high school and obtaining a BA and MA degree in Communication Design, Schnee has worked independently since 2015, with clients as big as Adidas, Nike, and The Washington Post. “I work mostly with abstract and vibrant elements,” she says. “Whether it’s an animation, a mural or an installation. I incorporate my shapes in every piece of my work. For me, it’s magical to tell a story just with abstract elements and special textures.”

Inspired by surreal artists such as Ernst, Magritte, and Miro, Schnee says she loves the way these artists incorporated irony and metaphors into their pieces – a thing she herself strives to do. “With my art, I hope I can reach a lot of people and move something in them,” She says. “I want them to take a moment and think and maybe also rethink. And that I want to achieve in a playful and fun way that should not be dry and boring to experience.”

Elian Chali is an artist from Argentina who creates vibrant murals on buildings that once were plain and dull. Using shapes like squares and triangles, he creates the illusion of floating patterns that make his art come alive.

“Art has been and is, my salvation and ruin. I don’t perceive art just like something I do while painting,” he told Inside the Rift in an interview. “The artistic practice is a life practice that I found in everything that I do. I don’t think in making art forever, I think in living the same way that I live now forever. With or without art.”

Taylor White is the obscenely talented woman behind indoor and outdoor murals, portraits, and sketches that have drawn increasing interest thanks to their intense intimacy and bold expression, which draw the viewer close to the work and the artist herself.

White is often inspired by improvisational dance and the “exquisitely expressive” movements of the human body, so that a lot of her work is focused on human figures in relation to themselves and each other, exploring how consciousness and the soul manifest through the physical.

White’s choice to pursue painting took her to Australia, following life in both Norway and the States, which added onto her rich visual expression. Australia was a turning point in White’s career, as she began exhibiting her work in the streets as well as galleries, mainly creating delicate, ephemeral portraits of forlorn youth.

This incredible artist combines her classical training with bold colors in her work. This is the mark of the two sides that have shaped White – her art education on one hand, and the urban, street art and pop culture, on the other.

Scroll down to experience some of her intense, beautiful pieces.

Timothy Goodman is many things. A designer, illustrator, muralist, and author, he admits that when people ask him to describe what he does he says that his grandma calls him an artist. His art and words have populated anything and everything, from walls, buildings and packaging to cars, people, shoes, clothing, book jackets, magazine covers and galleries all over the world.

His clients include Google, Samsung, Uniqlo, Target, MoMA, Airbnb, Netflix, The New Yorker and The New York Times; and with more than 159k followers on Instagram – he’s a force to be reckoned with.

But whether it’s a large-scale public mural on the streets of NYC, a marker scrawling on a Uniqlo t-shirt, a web-based social experiment that documents his life, or writing personal stories on Instagram, Goodman wants to start dialogues about difficult topics such as love, heartbreak, politics, race, therapy and mental health. He believes the greatest joy as a designer and an artist is the ability to connect to another human emotionally through his work and words. A worthy cause, if any.

“I just want to create art that people can connect to,” he told Eye on Design. “I think so much of the time we make art for ourselves or for other people in our communities to see. With so many of the stories I’m trying to tell, I’m trying to make things for actual people. I think sharing your personal stories is sort of activism; when you connect to other lonely people in the world, I think there’s a service involved that is really powerful. I want to continue to use my work as a vehicle for that.”

According to Goodman, the key to good design is emotion. “If I can’t connect to someone seeing my work on an emotional level, then I don’t know why I’m doing it,” he stresses. “How do you interact with a great film or a great book or a great album? You’re connecting with it emotionally. So why wouldn’t I make my work in the face of that? I don’t know why we define graphic designers in such a small box. I just don’t know what the point of that is. There are so many ways for people to interact with one’s work.”

Amok Island is an artist from the Netherlands who currently lives in Australia. His murals are inspired by flora and fauna and his minimalistic style makes them modern and edgy.

“Amok Island (born Amsterdam, 1983) is a multi-disciplinary artist from the Netherlands, based in Fremantle, Western Australia and if he wasn’t an artist he would be a biologist. Heavily inspired by early naturalists’ scientific illustrations, his work embodies the accuracy and precision representative of technical drawings, used for identification purposes,” his website reads.

“Island pursues a point of balance where minimal shape and color remain capable of realistically representing a subject. To accomplish this, he renders his subjects to near bare minimum geometric elements of form, and places paramount importance on the use of a carefully considered colour palette.”

He painted murals in over 25 countries and exhibited his art in Australia, Japan, and the Netherlands. Scroll down to see it.

Chali’s art looks uniquely dynamic and creative. He often uses primary colors which makes his work almost minimalistic, despite bursting in color. Aside from these street projects, the artist creates paintings and prints that are often exhibited in galleries. He also works as a freelance curator.
