There’s no other way to put it: Mercedes Bellido’s paintings and illustrations are intense. Highly detailed and colored with a vibrant color palette, her work focuses mainly on animals that seem to jump right out of the canvas.
Born in Zaragoza, Spain, Bellido moved to Cuenca to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts and later moved to Madrid for her Art Investigation Masters Degree. Now (still based in Madrid) she shares her artworks on her Instagram page, where she has amassed more than 37 thousand followers.
Talking about her creative agenda with Cup of Couple, she admits that what draws her is the mystery surrounding her paintings. “I like it to seem calm but with a tension twist,” she admitted. “It’s complicated and risky to say that I will always have that intention. Normally creative minds use to change at some point our motivation, but anyway, I’d love to keep that disturbing and violent perspective.”
And talking about the artistic process itself she said: “First I decide if I’m gonna do a correlated painting series or a single illustration, then the inspiration work comes. I try to find pictures that help me to give shape to my idea, paint a draft (I’m not a big fan of drafts though, only the compositional ones) and then I begin to paint.”
