This Mumbai Café is Made Entirely Out of Cardboard

Situated in Mumbai’s central business district, Cardboard Bombay is a café that is made almost entirely from cardboard. The project was designed by Nuru Karim, founder of Mumbai-based architectural firm NUDES. They used 100% recyclable and biodegradable material to form the interior of the restaurant.

The material has been chosen because of its sustainability, versatility, and has excellent sound absorption properties. The design of the café includes free flowing geometry, customized furniture and fixtures sculpted from cardboard. NUDES has tested the material in real world constraints including humidity, water resistance, and temperature changes.

The team designed the chairs, light fixtures and wall partitions with similar free-flowing appearance, while the table tops are infused with wax treatment to prevent water absorption. The project aims to promote the use of environment-friendly materials to protect the earth’s resources towards a sustainable and greener future.
