Julia Mior’s rugs are so pretty, it’s a shame to step on them. “The rugs are made to be put on the ground,” stressed Mior in an interview with MONTECRISTO Magazine.
“A lot of people who buy my work want to hang them, but that isn’t necessarily how I intend it.” Indeed, her rugs look more like minimalist paintings, worth hanging on your wall, than a simple floor decoration.
Graduating with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in painting from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Mior studied painting and later embroidery. Currently based in Vancouver, BC, she has exhibited her work in showrooms in Vancouver and New York City.
“Weaving is so much more immediate than embroidery, which makes it very therapeutic,” she shared. Her tufted textiles focus mainly on plump, illustrated characters that remind us of Matisse and Tracey Emin.
But would you dare step on it?
