Woman Buys Balut Egg in a Restaurant and Makes it Her Pet

Erica Lim, a creative professional from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia didn’t expect that the ugly duckling she got two years ago would turn into a beautiful duck.

She bought a “balut” in a Vietnamese restaurant in Puchong and instead of eating it, she decided to make it her pet. Balut is a developing duck embryo that is boiled and eaten from the shell. It originated from the Philippines and is a popular street food in many Southeast Asian countries.

Driven by curiosity, Lim hatch the egg by building a makeshift incubator from a Styrofoam box with heat lamps. Two weeks later, a little duckling was born and she instantly fell in love with the duckling and she named her Bibit.

Lim and her pet were inseparable, doing things together like watching TV, reading books, or just playing around the house. “Ducks make wonderful companions. My Bibit is charming and attentive. I hope more people realize how much fun it is to have a duck as a pet,” Lim said.
