Yumi Okita Sculpts Giant Fabric Butterflies and Moths

Yumi Okita is an artist based in North Carolina whose hand-painted fabric butterflies and moths look really impressive. Each sculpture she makes is completely unique and made by hand. The butterflies and moths are often inspired by the real species that exist in nature as Okita tries to mimic their colors and shapes.

Okita designs her sculptures to hang from wires or be displayed as free-standing works. The largest ones have a 9.5-inch wingspan and are 3.5 to 4.5 inches tall. When seen from a distance, they could be easily mistaken for real insects, but a closer look reveals that vibrant colors come from carefully weaved materials.

You can check out Okita’s work on her Instagram page and buy butterflies from her using her Etsy page. Scroll down to see some of them.
