Corsets experienced somewhat of a renaissance in recent years, and none of that would’ve been possible without small, alternative brands fueling their comeback. Atasan Studio is one of them, and their amazing designs are a love letter to Japanese pop culture.
Atasan Studio was established in Malaysia in 2021, and they used the power of social media to reach fashion lovers from every corner of the globe. Their Instagram page attracted almost 200,000 followers with their meticulously crafted handmade corsets inspired by the Japanese culture.
Many of Atasan Studio’s corsets feature motifs that capture the essence of Japan, such as Sakura flowers, koi fish, and dragons, but that’s not the reason why they blew up on social media. Atasan became a huge hit thanks to their pop-culture-themed designs, and they’re bringing the artistry and storytelling of anime to the world of fashion.
We’ve seen Atasan Studio’s designers pay homage to many anime we all know and love, but Studio Ghibli’s films are definitely their biggest source of inspiration, including Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki’s Delivery Service. Corsets inspired by Spirited Away, however, are the biggest hit among the brand’s fans, and they’ve even gotten the seal of approval from several influencers and Never Have I Ever actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.
