Artist Creates Topography-Inspired Portraits and Each Has Up to 2500 Pieces

Octavian Mielu is a Romanian artist who draws inspiration from urban, pop art culture and topographic mappings.

Ever since he was a kid, he liked to draw on the walls of his parent’s apartment then explore other media such as coloring books, pen, crayons, and paint. He has created all kinds of art in a wide range of media over the years. Most recently he has tried his hand with digital art.

In 2014 he started to take his artwork more seriously after he was inspired by seeing some topographic maps.

“I wanted to make some real, hands-on art. After having been working digitally for a while, I found the process of working with physical materials again messy but much more satisfying. It took five years to complete this project. Over those years, I did many tests with a variety of different materials and paints, tried different designs, and also opened an art studio,” he wrote on Bored Panda.

Each of his artworks is composed of up to 2500 individual pieces of different shapes and sizes. Each piece has to be cut and painted, and then the sculpture is assembled one piece at a time. Though he was a self-taught artist, his work is a depiction of quality and originality. Scroll down to his wonderful creations.
