Layers of Transparent Shades Surround a Bookstore in Suzhou, China

Founded by architect YU Ting and designer MIN Erni in Shanghai, WUtopia Lab offers unique and innovative works both for interior and exterior designs.

One of their recent works is the metal rainbow referred to as the “Xanadu of Rainbows,” installed inside a bookstore in Suzhou, China. “Xanadu” means an idealized place of great or idyllic splendour and beauty. This is what WUtopia Lab wanted to create with the colorful structure.

The metal rainbow is made of one-cm wide aluminum sheets that have been pierced and cut into wavy shapes. The curved panels, which functionally divide the open space into sections, are installed along the ceiling and down the walls of the bookstore’s reading room, giving the place a vibrant atmosphere.
