Hannes Hummel is an artist and designer from Cologne, Germany, who dedicated a significant part of his creative effort towards bringing together digital tools and natural patterns in the form of fine art. The most recent result of this effort is an impressive art series Hybrid Species.
In Hybrid Species, Hummel used digital tools including artificial intelligence (AI) to create surreal flower hybrids inspired by real-life flora. Each of these hybrid flowers looks familiar at first glance, but the more you explore their finer features, the more they look to be out of this world.
There are a total of 80 digital flowers in the series, with each one being a mash-up of various floral species as well as other botanical elements. While unsettling at moments, these creations are immensely intriguing and captivating.
“In this series, nature is portrayed not as it is, but as it could be—reimagined, reshaped, and rendered through algorithms. Hybrid Species presents a vision of flora from a parallel world, where nature is captured through a digital lens, without a mirror,” Hummel shares.
