Residents of Thailand Discover a Sustainable Way to Pack Food

The use of plastic containers for packaging food is nothing short than a disaster. According to the United Nations, going by the rate at which plastic products are being consumed, by 2050, there will be twelve billion tons of plastic in landfills. In addition to this, according to the UN, only 9% of all the plastics made, have been recycled.

Could there be a change in the near future? Recently, Thailand has started to change the order of things, by replacing plastic containers with banana leaves.

Pictures taken at the Rimping supermarket in Chiang Mai show that banana leaves have taken the place of plastic containers. Since the photos went viral, other supermarkets jumped on board.

Aside from the flavor, there are health benefits derived from banana leaves, as it is used in cooking and preparation of medicines in some parts of the world. This makes it far more beneficial than plastic products.
