Sarah Maxwell’s Illustrations Are Inspired By Anime Aesthetic

Sarah Maxwell’s pastel-colored illustrations are a recipe for wistfulness. According to her website, her work is best summed up in four keywords: nostalgia, tenderness, femininity, and 80’s electronic music.

The comic artist is known for her pastel-colored artwork, that ranges from fashion illustration to animated GIFs and comics. Growing up in the ’90s and early ’00s, she’s inspired by anime aesthetic and is drawn to anything delicate.

“I always knew I wanted to work as an illustrator, but it wasn’t until I started creating more authentic personal work and posting on my social media accounts that I gained an audience,” she shared with Communication Arts. “Shortly after growing a significant following, a lot of clients started approaching me, and that’s when it all began!”

“I try to take on work that has a story that I can relate to—especially if it has a spark and is really moving,” she went on to explain. “It’s great to be the one to bring that story to life. These pieces are the ones I can look back on and be proud of.”
