Street Artist Duo Created Gigantic Painted Sculpture for Valencia’s Fallas Festival

Every March, Spain has a traditional festival in Valencia called Fallas. It is dated back thousands of years and held to commemorate St. Joseph. Residents across the city spend the year creating a giant puppet called a falla.

This year, street art duo PichiAvo, took their classic and contemporary art to a new heights by creating an  85-foot tall painted sculpture for the festival. PichiAvo are best known for their symbolic work, which combines classical sculptures with graffiti motifs.

“For us, it was like discovering the historical Fallas Festival from inside, from its core,” PichiAvo told My Modern Met. “It was a moment of pride and satisfaction for both of us, especially when we finally saw our monumental scale sculpture set up in the main City Hall Square of Valencia.”

Each part of the gigantic sculpture had to be painted by the artists over the period of several months. Working with a group of fabricators, a lightweight wood shell was made and then covered, leaving a black canvas for PichiAvo to paint their vibrant mark.
