These Tea Sets Are Decked Out With Prison Tattoos

Just when you thought the art world couldn’t surprise you more comes a new form of ingenuity: ceramic sets sporting prison tattoos. Tel-Aviv-based artist Valeria Monis adds a funky twist to the tradiotinal blue porcelain tea sets, adding motifs from Russian prison tattoos.

Each of her ceramic pieces is designed, crafted and illustrated handmade, incorporating illustrations taken from photographs, personal stories, and the Soviet police prison files.

“The motifs depicted – ranging from violence and pornography to politics and alcohol-represent the uncensored lives of the criminal classes,” explains the artist on her website. “The illustrations they wear on their skin tells the story of their closed society, a society with its own hierarchy and social structure. “

Monis’ unique sets are truly one of a kind. Take a closer look.
