We find most sculptures displayed in museums or urban spaces. But in order to witness the works of English sculptor Jason Decaires Taylor, you need to look beneath the surface of the water.
Decaires Taylor creates permanent site-specific sculptures that he almost exclusively displays underwater. By submerging them in marine environments, he aims to explore „modern themes of conservation and environmental activism.“
The artist builds his sculpture using pH neutral and environmentally sensitive materials. This allows the pieces to become a part of their surrounding without affecting it in a negative way while also constantly changing through decay and becoming home to marine life.
According to Taylor, his “pioneering public art projects are not only examples of successful marine conservation, but works of art that seek to encourage environmental awareness and lead us to appreciate the breathtaking natural beauty of the underwater world.”
Decaires Taylor’s sculptures can be found all around the world, from Australia to Cyprus and Canada. They are also the focal point of Molinere Bay Underwater Sculpture Park in Granada, West Indies, where visitors can check out 75 works.
