Hola Lou Treats Her Art as a Delicate Balancing Act

Artist Luisa Salas (aka Hola Lou) works around color and shape. A former graphic designer and art director, her paintings and illustrations are based on some of the basic concepts of visual aesthetics: composition, color contrast, and most importantly, balance.

Based in Mexico, Salas often finds herself inspired by the ever-changing sceneries of her diverse country. “I’ve always had a thing for minimalism and simplicity,” she told Inky Goodness, “but then I guess my Latin-American warm side always kicks in and adds a huge amount of color…without even asking, haha! Over the last few years I’ve learned a lot about my local culture and environment, and so have found myself increasingly influenced by it. Subsequently, incorporating natural shapes and forms have become second nature.”

Indeed, Salas’ paintings carefully balance between minimalist shapes and bold colors. While exploring the limits of simplicity and minimalism, Salas focuses her art on an endless study of color reactions by carefully proportioning a mix of tension and organic movements.

And when she isn’t working, she takes pleasure in the simple things in life. “Although I love traveling, when you have a 3-year-old at home you learn to enjoy simple things like camping with family and friends, or simply taking a stroll with an ice cream,” she says.

Sounds dreamy to us!
