Lara Pickle’s Art Tells Thrilling Stories

Larisa Bumb, also known as Lara Pickle, specializes in concept art, visual development, and background design for animation. She has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a master’s in animation which she earned at Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain.

“I was always the creative and dreamy person in my family,” she says about her first steps as an artist. “Always had stories to tell and loved drawing since I could hold a pencil! My early introduction to art, though, was Cartoon Network and UPA cartoons. I loved my Scooby Doo, Bugs Bunny, and Powerpuff Girls cartoons in a way I can’t even describe. I would watch all the episodes every time, and I would draw them all the time as well. It really made me want to just draw and create!”

FINISHED this one!! So. After doing that last colorkey I kinda didn't like to much the shaping of things and redid it a bit more polished so I could comprehend things better, like what was what in the composition. Then I learned how to properly use the "lasso" tool in @procreate – it's a bit more different than photoshop but lasso tool and the pen tool are just my favorites. But anyway, after finishing this I've came to some conclusions: -I'm not very skilled with the brush directions (atm!). I am more of painting while filling shapes of color and it frustrates me to death to to an actual painting. I never learnt how to properly direction the brush so it's something I will have to work on this year 🙁 – My understanding of hues and values is a bit basic in terms of how colors really work with each other. I do many things by intuition but I will have to work on color theory from now on so I can accurately use proper colors for lightning and shading. -I do have an eye for composition but I need to simplify it a bit in general. I think I tend to do crazy crowded bgs because I want to prove myself that I can do it, and there is really nothing to prove, it's just about the learning process. Always. . . So after these conclusions which left me both motivated and bittersweet, I'm going to be doing more and more drawings do polish my flaws and turn them into great perk, so I can say a very proud "hey, I would absolutely put this bit into my portfolio!!" – By the end of the year, I'll be way better, and it's entirely up to me!! ✨ Thank you for following this process and I hope you like the final piece! 🙂 . . . #backgroundart #conceptart #conceptartist #conceptdesign #digitalpainting #larapickle

Heya! So remember my story from yesterday? I did this very crappy concept art and I really didn't like it but as I was staring at it, I first wondered if I was good at all at this, then I just slapped myself mentally because I am good, I know the theory, I just need time to apply it! So what I decided is to be shameless enough to take this crappy concept and turn it into what I really wanted to do and had in my head. I know many of you would say that it's pretty and that you like it. It does have some okay points, but overall, it's pretty bad because: . -The composition is not following any direction and the big figure is overlaping with that builing in the back so it kinda blocks the eye of travelling anywhere else in the drawing, you just get stuck there. I want the focal point to be She Wolf (which is the char up front of both boys :D) . -There are no values colour wise. The hierarchy is wrong and it goes straight from brights to darks and while I know a evening light might cause a similar effect, it is not that drastic and it has quite a very big amount of hues beneath. . These are the main things that makes me hate it so much, but hey, knowing the flaws helped me to correct them afterwards. So if you swipe, you will see first a correction of the main focus on the ratio, then a very rough drawing of the environment where I put the elements in a way that would point at her so we would have some direction. After that I thought It would be best to do a colorkey to block the elements and try to find the mood and the colors before actually moving into actual painting. For now I only got to the point of "finding the mood". But what I mean with all this is that it's very important that you guys analyze why you don't like your own work, because it always helps you out next time you do stuff! – Also it's always good to keep in mind some of the theory while doing these kind of concepts, otherwise the story you want to tell could be misunderstood! Whelp, sorry for the bible! Hope u find these interesting! I will keep working on bgs and stuff like this and showing stuff from time to time. You'll read more about this as soon as I'm settled in London in March #learnuary
