Have you ever felt that your brain and heart are “telling” you different things? Wouldn’t it be great if they could talk things out between each other and get on the same ground? It sure would, at least according to the amusing series of comics Heart and Brain.

Created by cartoonist Nick Seluk, Heart and Brain comics imagine what would happen if human organs could talk. They feature all sorts of funny scenarios and conversations that feel quite relatable. For example, most of us experienced situations where our hearts were “telling” us to quit our jobs and pursue our true passions before our brains stepped in and reminded us that we should be more passionate about being able to pay our bills.

Seluk ventured into comic creation in 2012 with The Awkward Yeti comics. The original comic followed the daily life of a blue Yeti named Lars, who would occasionally have conversations with anthropomorphized versions of his heart and brain.

While Heart and Brain were envisioned as side characters, they soon became fan favorites. This prompted Seluk to create a Heart and Brain spin-off comic, which has since outshined the original.

It is often easy to figure out how a webcomic will end just by looking at its first panel. However, with Inky Rickshaw Comics, created by artist Ricky Hawkins, you never know what to expect.

Hawkins’ super fun comics are a gift that keeps on giving. They always pack some surprises at the end, bringing lots of laughs but also leaving you a bit puzzled.

Hawkins has been interested in comics as a creative outlet for a while but only started being more focused on these projects in 2018 when he started Inky Rickshaw Comics. Over time, the number of followers on his social media started to grow and encouraged him to invest more time into them.

Now, Inky Rickshaw Comics has 35K followers on Instagram alone, with the number only growing as these comics keep on finding ways to reach new fans with their entertaining nature.

“I’m still an aspiring artist myself, but I’ll say that one of the most important things is to keep creating and striving to improve as those are lifelong pursuits,” Hawkins gave advice to artists who are looking to get into webcomics in a recent chat with Bored Panda. “Make the art that interests you, and you will eventually find an audience. It also helps to nurture a positive attitude and a good sense of humor!”

A good laugh doesn’t hurt anybody, right? If you feel the world is falling apart, finding and enjoying a funny comic is always a good idea. It can brighten up your day and bring a smile to your face—or at least that’s what Pete Joison tries to achieve with his hobby.

Originally a graphic designer, Joison was encouraged by his family and friends to start posting his drawings online. He has been doodling for years, but it was only back in February 2020 when he launched his Instagram account titled Once We Were Turnips.

He describes his style as “simple lines full of whimsy” and explains that he has always been inspired by simple comic art like Peanuts, Gary Larson, and Garfield, as well as shows like The Simpsons, Ren & Stimpy, and Invader Zim.

He currently has more than 11,000 Instagram followers and says that he likes having a creative outlet that doesn’t include clients or deadlines, which helps him stay sane.

Besides his Instagram profile, you can find Joison on his website, where you can buy hand-drawn canvases.

Scroll down and take a look at his creations in the gallery below. Did he make you laugh? If so, don’t forget to follow him on social media for more fun things.

“I imagined kids chanting songs about my bad lesson plans and twerking during flag salute. I was, very clearly, sleep-deprived,” Rose shared on Bored Panda. “The sleep never really came back to me, but more comic ideas did. After a post blew up on Reddit, I created an official Summers Off Instagram and dedicated my time to growing it into one of the top teacher comics online today. To my surprise, not only could teachers relate, but parents and students could as well.”

Her webcomics, shared on her Instagram page, is drawn in her distinct style, and naturally is full of pugs. “I love the personalities of animals,” she told Creative Boom. “They are so varied. Pugs, in particular, are such characters; they are very silly and funny. I like imagining what animals might say if they could talk.”

“I knew from a young age that I wanted to draw and write for a living. I was always encouraged to draw by teachers and friends,” she shared. “Once I realized that I could use art as a tool to get out of PE lessons, I was even keener. At primary school, I was sometimes allowed to stay in the classroom and make posters for upcoming school events rather than put myself through the humiliation of falling over and generally being terrible at all of the sports.”

The first comics to be shared online were created in the mid-1980s, but by the year 2000, this genre exploded, becoming more artistically recognized. With the rise of social media platforms, specifically Instagram, this storytelling format doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon. More than being just funny, our favorite comics are the ones we can relate to. Here are some illustrators on Instagram you’d want to follow.

Stephanie Davidson

Born in Hong Kong, raised in Tokyo/Honolulu and now living in Brooklyn, NYC, Stephanie Davidson’s illustrations and webcomics rely on and draw inspiration from her mixed background. Her artistic voice is somber and somewhat reflective. Sometimes consisting of one panel only, her webcomics aren’t aimed at children but rather at ironic, self-conscious adults like ourselves.

Gemma Correll

When it comes to webcomics, Gemma Correll is somewhat a celebrity. The cartoonist, writer, and illustrator, loves incorporating her pet pug into her child-like illustrations. “I love the personalities of animals,” she told Creative Boom. “They are so varied. Pugs, in particular, are such characters; they are very silly and funny. I like imagining what animals might say if they could talk.”

Berlin-based illustrator, Karolina Zolubak, documents her motherhood journey – from pregnancy to her first steps of being a young mother of one – through a series of illustrations she regularly posts on Instagram.

With a Master of Arts in communication and cultural studies, Zolubak realized her artistic passion through hard work. “I have been drawing as a child, also as a teenager,” she told Strangerless, talking about the long road she took until realizing her true calling. “I’ve always been creative in one way or another but then… life happened. I wanted to study something creative but was convinced that to make a living it was a much better choice to study something else, something substantial. Although surely one could argue that Cultural Science, which I chose and concluded with a Master of Arts (sic!), wasn’t the best choice for earning money either.”

After moving out from home at the age of 17 she studied, worked as a translator, and inadvertently stopped drawing. “I had a wound in my heart, yet I thought I understood that adult life was not supposed to be fun,” she said. “It was just supposed to work out and therefore you needed to compromise, work and be serious. Creativity was put aside and labeled as a childish wish.”

Now she works full time as an illustrator, making editorial illustrations and personalised and individual illustrations; and proving, therefore, that work can be both serious and fun. With a passion for traveling and a huge love for all things creative, she’s inspired by different cultures, languages, and music.

Fran Meneses

Fran Meneses’ webcomic is the meaning of relatable. Colored in pastel colors, Meneses translates the mundanities of everyday life to funny punches. Aside from her webcomics, she also works on a graphic novel with her husband and runs a YouTube channel.
