Redmer Hoekstra is a visual artist and illustrator from the Netherlands, specializing in creating unbelievably surreal illustrations, made by using pencils. Combining people, animals, and inanimate objects, the finished product is unique as it is whimsical.
In Hoekstra’s drawings, an owl has wings made of books, a sea turtle is swimming with a ship on her shell, and a giraffe turns into a toothbrush. Hoekstra shared with My Modern Met that these illustrations reveal his thoughts on how the world actually works.
“As a child I had all kinds of theories about how the world worked,” he said. “How things work is a fascination of mine and in many drawings, you can find this.”
Take a closer look:
“I open up appliances and objects and freely change what is inside. Often a subject gets a completely different feeling or meaning. I play with form, meaning and function, while new combinations arise. Often surprising, strange and funny, but also with a strange kind of logic, a fantastic and surreal world.”
How you interpret these illustrations is up to you, but one thing is certain – they’re absolutely mind-blowing.
