Japanese design studio Nendo recently introduced an airless ball that aims to allow more people to enjoy the game of soccer. Named My Football Kit, the ball comes in pieces that users can assemble themselves.
According to Nendo, the ball’s design is inspired by a Japanese woven bamboo ball and it offers the same kicking feel as a standard soccer ball. It consists of 54 parts made out of soft, recycled polypropylene and elastomeric synthetic resin components and is resilient to all playing surfaces.
“Should a component come off during play, the interlocking structure ensures the ball will not disassemble. It provides high maintainability and economic efficiency in that it can be restored by replacing only the broken components, achieving one ball’s long duration of use, “the design studio explains.
The main goal of My Football Kit is to allow people, especially children, in impoverished areas to enjoy soccer. As part of fulfilling that goal, Nendo also launched a “One for One” campaign. For every purchased ball, the studio will also donate one ball to those who are unable to afford one.
My Football kit is priced at 13,200 Japanese Yen ($84.19) on Nendo’s online shop. However, at the moment, it is listed as “Sold Out”.
