New Pixar’s Short Film Sends Message about Workplace Equality

Animation company Pixar has released their first short film from the new SparkShorts program they recently launched. The film is titled Purl and it covers the story of a female ball of yarn who starts a new job at a male-dominated office. In 8 short minutes, we get to see her dealing with gender equality issues in the workplace, which is a common struggle for many women today.

Creator Kristen Lester knows very well what it’s like to be the only female in the office. “My first job, I was like the only woman in the room, and so in order to do the thing that I loved, I sort of became one of the guys,” she shares. “And then I came to Pixar, and I started to work on teams with women for the first time, and that actually made me realize how much of the female aspect of myself I had sort of buried and left behind.”
