These are Some of the Most Incredible Paper Artists Out There

For most artists, the process of art-making comes with a hefty price tag. The prices for art materials can soar to incredible heights, notwithstanding additional necessities such as high-powered computers and cameras. But for paper artists, it all boils down to a pair of scissors and some paper. It’s this fact alone which makes the following artists and their creations all the more remarkable.

Calvin Nicholls

Sticking to white A4 paper, Calvin Nicholls manages to bring animals like lions, birds, and bears to life, recreating their fur and feathers with incredible detail. Each of his pieces begins with a drawn pattern, which he traces and transfers to sculpture paper. He then cuts each one with a scalpel or X-acto knife, using very small amounts of glue to assemble the figure piece by piece. “Every piece is a discovery of sorts too,” he wrote on his website. “I’m always learning with each new sculpture.”

Sam Pierpoint

Paper artist Sam Pierpoint directs, designs, cuts, and handcrafts all of her creations with her paper sculptures used both commercially and artistically. Her pieces are playful and eye-popping, she uses vibrant colors to make her creations stand out in the crowd. You can find her sculptures featured in print, but also displayed in their physical form.

Marianne Eriksen-Scott Hansen

Danish paper artist, Marianne Eriksen-Scott Hansen, makes huge paper flowers, using 50 to 60 layers of paper to create each of her pieces and cutting through delicate details. Her “paper couture” pieces also include hand-cut accessories, which have caught the attention of megastars like Björk and Steven Tyler. We’d love to rock some of her colorful designs.
