This Couple Ditched Their Day Jobs to Travel the World in a Van

Lee was your typical Canadian university graduate, about to enter adult life and work 40 hours a week. Then, one visit to Australia changed her life forever.

On a post-university trip to Australia, Lee met Max, a local paramedic, and adventurer. They immediately clicked and decided to go backpacking together for 5 weeks. When the trip came to an end, they both knew they were destined to spend their lives together and travel the world.

It was finally time for Lee to go back home to Canada, and Max decided to join her. They knew it was just another stop on their journey, not their final destination, but they had to work on a plan. They decided to join the ever-growing movement of “van lifers”, adventurers who travel the world in a van. That bought an old used van for 10k Canadian dollars and spent another 11K dollar on renovations. It took a whole year to get the van ready for the road.

Once the van was ready, they packed their few belongings, took their Australian Shepherd Occy and hit the road. So far they’re traveled across Canada, spent a few months in the US, then traveled through Mexico for six months. They’ve traveled through South America, and are now back in the States for another tour!

Life in a van isn’t all good all the time. It’s crowded, you have to think about every single purchase, and traveling can get pretty hectic. Max and Lee aren’t shy about that – they share their dark moments with their fans, as well as the nice ones. But at the end of the day, it seems to work for them. Living with less stuff and not being held down by a 9-5 work, mortgages and bills can be freeing – and freedom is just what they’re about.

I’ve always been the kind of person who loves to share. Ever since vowing that I would always “share and be a friend” as a little girl in sparks (Canadian girl guides) I stuck to that promise. If you ask me how I’m doing, I’m likely to give you a long winded answer so if you weren’t actually looking for a conversation you’d be asking the wrong person. Sharing my life and desire for adventure with Max is how we’ve come to live in a van and travel the entire Americas. Sharing my life with you is how we have been able to inspire travel, help out deserving people and learn so much about ourselves. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, there is something that I haven’t shared lately and it’s because I have found it so incredibly hard to talk about. I have been struggling with my own insecurities and uncertainties and it has been causing me feelings of anxiety and depression. I feel like I’m lying to you all when I share a moment of me when I’m happy since there are many other moments when I am anxious or depressed. It has been very confusing to navigate through and there have been many moments where I’d rather disappear forever than deal with these emotions. It has been especially hard to show up in front of a camera in this state of mind which is one of the reasons we have taken a step back. Max has been my biggest supporter through all of this as well as my family and close friends. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have spent a lot of time going inwards, meditating and journaling and today I am feeling comfortable to share this as I am finally, for the first time in months feeling more like myself again. The reason I want to open up with you on THIS platform is because there has been many times where I have compared my self online asking why everyone else’s life looks so easy and or “perfect” and I am here struggling. So just remember, everyone is on their own journey and moving at their own pace through this world ☀️✌🏼💛
