An Open-Impressionism Pioneer’s Stunning Paintings Will Leave You Breathless

Some say modern art reached its peak in the 20th century. That it sometimes seems as if it went too far into abstraction. On the other hand, others prove that there is still space for new ideas and movements.

Erin Hanson is a pioneer and developer of open impressionism. This artistic approach is inspired by 19th-century impressionists. Hanson’s goal with this movement is to capture the beauty of the natural world. She thought that impressionists’ style is ideal for such a thing.

Hanson lives in California but often travels around exploring America’s wine regions and National Parks, searching for natural landscapes she’ll find inspiring.

Her paintings burst with colors and she renders them with expressive brushstrokes. There is a strong accent of the outlines which remind of stained glass windows or mosaics. Hansen’s paintings perfectly capture the play of light and shadow and they’re perfect for freezing moments in time in Western landscapes. To her, open impressionism is all about capturing impressions of a landscape, colors, and memories. Although she often paints using photographs she makes as models, she does not try to recreate photos. Her goal is to get her viewers to open see the world a little differently.
