Artist Illustrates the Voices People Battling Mental Illness Hear

Artist Rachael Bright is an illustrator from Virginia and the creator of the Voices in the Grey, a humanitarian art project depicting how depression makes individuals feel in a sensory way, which she created while healing from a debilitating illness. Her illustrations are made of mixed media; she uses gouache watercolor and colored pencils.

“I illustrate anonymously the voices of individuals who are suffering from depression, anxiety, and mental illness to help destigmatize mental illness and also to help unburden them at the same time,” the artist shared on Bored Panda. “People often open up to me in a way they can’t to family and friends.”

When this article was written, Bright has completed 105 images, while she is looking for more Voices. Her current goal is to illustrate 365 Voices, one for each day of the year.

She shares her illustrations on her social media accounts, on Instagram and Facebook, as well as on her personal website.
