Aurélia Durand’s Art is Bold and Colorful

For Aurélia Durand, art was nothing short of a revelation. “It started when I entered a pre-art school just after high school,” she told African Digital Art, “it was a revelation for me. In this place, I experimented all kinds of art drawings, paintings, sculpture, and product design.”

“I was studying in Paris which is the best place to study art; there are many museums, galleries, and events,” she went on to explain. “In school, I studied the history of art, I was fascinated by the contemporary art, I like a lot Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Cindy Scherman, Basquiat, Yayoi Kusama, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, Murakami, Olafur Eliasson, Anish Kapoor, A Wei Wei and many more.”

About a year ago, I organized my first ever exhibition in Copenhagen. I spent three weeks to paint a series of colorful paintings which I wanted to disposed as panels to show my engagement as an artist. My idea was to make a colorful and joyful demonstration. I did something out of my comfort zone, I didn’t know how many people will come and join the event and Iwas not sure if I did something cool enough to be looked at… I just did it because I was passionated and I knew deep down I had to do it so people will notice my art and my engagement off line. I wanted to create a connection with people and talk one to one with an audience. I think as an artist it’s important to be humble and feel gratitude for those who support and engage with the art. So I want to thank you for being part of the process here. In about a year my life has changed not by miracle but with lots of hard work and insecurities. After I got my master in product design in France I didn’t know what kind of artist I will become, I searched myself for five years, I traveled, I failed, I cried, I pushed myself and did all again. And even if today things are great I am still in process. To be an artist you need to be innovative, bring your own story to the visuals. It’s not because something works that means you have to copy to be also successful. You have to be true to yourself and to the people who surround you. ✌🏿

Born and raised in the suburbs of Paris, she now works full time as a graphic artist, with her work varying from illustration and animation to acrylic paintings. Her clients include giants like Adobe, Instagram, Tinder, and Refinery 29.

Her illustrations – bold, graphic, and colorful – focus mainly on African men and women. As for her inspiration, she says it comes from life itself: from films, music videos, photography, and other kinds of art and design forms, but also from the people she meets and the conversations she has with them. “As a creative person traveling is essential for getting new inspiration and bringing more nuances in my work,” Durand writes on her website. “I like to challenge my work by pushing myself to get new habits. My travels influence my work; my visuals are colorful and vibrant and aim to reflect the diversity of our society.”

It’s summer and I want to look back to the last couple of months of this year and talk more on projects I have been doing. The first one of the list is my collaboration with @songemusic. We started working together in February on the cover art of her new first album FLAVORITE CÂLÂ. It was an amazing collaboration, we connected quickly, our respective universe has found each other by our interest for colors. I just love working with musicians who like to incorporate visual art to their musical universe. Music talks to me and I try to give my visual version of the vibrations with still pictures and animations. Months after I made the illustration, I am still impressed by the visual. I gave a unique identity to the album with the shapes and the combination of colors. I got the chance after making the cover to create 10 shorts animations of the songs from the album. I developed further the universe of the album by illustrating each song. As Sônge is working with colors when she writes a song I had to incorporate some textures and colors in the visuals. We talked for two intensive weeks on the animations and how to create harmony with colors and movements. It was pretty cool and also hard work. After making the animations to celebrate the release of the album last Mars Sônge organized an event in a gallery in Paris with the artwork. And we got to meet for the first time and the connection was even more cool! I am happy cause I got to meet a very nice person and built a friendship from a cool art project. Swipe to watch some of the animations.
