Illustrator Captures Little Moments of Joy

Illustrator and artist Gemma Koomen creates tiny magical worlds filled with splendor. Made with gouache, ink, and the occasional color pencil, Koomen’s illustrations aim to capture little moments of joy.

“I get really motivated when I have a new art supply to try out, it’s fun to try out new materials,” she shared with Freelance Wisdom. “My biggest way of building my creative appetite is by simply drawing every day. I become so much more attuned to working in my own visual language that the ideas flow more naturally.”

Inspired by vintage books, Koomen loves collecting picture books, filled with illustrations. But like most illustrators, Koomen’s initial love of art began when she was a child when she would spend hours scribbling with crayons and pencils on anything and everything, including the walls and furniture.

As an adult, she went on to study Fine Art Photography at Glasgow School of art, after which she completed her Masters in Illustration. Nowadays she works as a freelance illustrator and runs her online shop where you can buy selected prints of her splendid illustrations.
